OnePlus Buds Z (Gray vs white)
The OnePlus Buds Z wireless earbuds are the company's most recent offering. After the OnePlus Buds, which were released a few months back, they are the company's second pair of fully wireless earbuds. The OnePlus Buds Z, unlike the OnePlus Buds, have an in-ear build and are dust and water resistant to IP55.They also have a lower claimed battery life of 5 hours of continuous use compared to the OnePlus Buds' 7 hours.
The OnePlus Buds Z, on the other hand, are less expensive than the OnePlus Buds, making them more appealing. They're also one of the cheapest TWS earbuds on the market from a well-known company, and they seem to have a complete range of features, at least on paper. We'll see how well the OnePlus Buds Z do for their price in this study.
Design
Since the OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2, the company has used the same signature OnePlus design on all of its wireless audio devices, including the OnePlus Buds Z earbuds. This includes an oblong shape that houses the drivers, as well as a wide, smooth, circular back panel with a touch-sensitive CD-like pattern.Except for the long stalk that sticks out at the bottom and houses the battery, antenna, and other electronics, the speaker housing looks almost identical to those on the Bullets Wireless 2/Z.
The OnePlus Buds Z have silicone ear-tips on the inside, which are comfortable but not as soft or snug-fitting as the Bullets Wireless 2/Z's. The two contacts that charge the earbuds while they are within the case, as well as what appears to be a pressure release port, are located next to the ear-tip.
The touch-sensitive region around the ear-tip is used to assess if the earbuds are in your ears. This is a less precise and error-prone alternative to using an optical proximity sensor, which is available on more costly TWS models but was most likely used here to save money.
Overall, the OnePlus Buds Z are well-designed and constructed. They also have an IP55 dust and water resistance score, making them ideal for use in light rain or during sweaty workouts.
Despite the fact that the earbuds have stalks, the case is designed horizontally rather than vertically. Even so, the case takes up a surprisingly limited amount of room.
The case is made of hard, shiny plastic on the outside. An LED on the front of the case glows red when it's charging and green when it's finished. A USB-C port with a pairing button can be found on the back. This case does not support wireless charging.
performance
Audio production is outstanding.
For the price, the OnePlus Buds Z provide decent audio quality. They have a warm, bassy sound with a sprinkling of high-end sparkle for good measure.
The low-end of the OnePlus Buds Z is very high. The bass is consistently boosted across the range, resulting in a strong and resonant low-frequency response. This gives percussion instruments more body, which isn't always desirable because you don't want the conga to sound like the bass drum, for example. However, since you're not really reproducing the sound of an actual instrument with electronic music, fidelity is less of a concern, and it's more of a matter of personal preference. The low-end is a little warm for me, but your mileage can vary.
The mid-range is a bit of a mishmash. The lower mid-range is very well replicated, giving a lot of male voices a lot of body and appearance. This is apparent not only in music but also in other forms of content such as podcasts. Some string instruments, such as the bass guitar and the cello, work well with it as well.
The upper mid-range, on the other hand, is where the sound falls below the intended target. Female vocals and most string instruments lose energy as a result, and some male vocals sound hollow as a result. It also makes the sound a little muddy and gloomy.
